Hiring is starting to feel more like a company posturing in a defensive position, rather than a judgmental or evaluative mindset.
As cynical as this may sound, greed and envy are to blame, which is the norm at top of the world amongst the aristocracy and bureaucrats. People are too greedy to let in outsiders and will envy those who have more wealth and power than them. But the greed isn’t just about money. It’s social status, connections, physical assets or stocks, even ideas aren’t safe from being snatched up and hidden away like secret recipes.
As for the envy, it is nuanced. There’s a million ways others will cope with envy. The most obvious thing they do is take your livelihood away by arresting it, copying it, then destroying it.
- Arresting it – They use the law, cash, or mobilize a small army to take what you have. You are now pressed under their thumb.
- Copying it – There’s something to get out of capturing your livelihood. For everything they can’t physically take, they will simply use against you.
- Destroying it – They nail the coffin shut, they will slander you and your family will fall with you. Anyone and anything associated with you will dive into the void or get scavenged by evil lesser vultures.
It’s a repeatable formula of pure destruction. Sometimes the people who try to do this to you don’t have a lot of money or an army at their disposal. Sometimes those people are your coworkers or your friends. There are hidden vultures waiting to swoop in and take your rotting corpse.
Hiring managers are a type of gatekeeper to large pools of greed. They have all these polices and rules they made up. “You can’t be 5 minutes back from lunch or we will fire you.” Hiring manager’s attributes are all about vetting to make sure you don’t take away their mountain of greed, which are especially potent the larger a company is. And I don’t blame them personally, it’s their job.
Although, I do think this can all be alleviated by having a good personality and knowing when you’re being f**ked with.
I’m just glad I am able to go a few minutes over during lunch at my current job without someone breathing down my neck.
